“It’s ridiculous”- Liverpool legend blasts critics who doubted new signing

Robbie Fowler thinks it’s ridiculous that people doubted Darwin Nunez after a couple of pre-season games

Robbie Fowler has blasted critics who made a judgement about Darwin Nunez after his performances against Manchester United and Crystal Palace. The Reds legend doesn’t understand the criticism the Uruguayan got after just a few games.

The 23-year-old had a disappointing time in front of the goal in Liverpool’s first two friendlies. Rival fans were immediately on the striker’s case for missing opportunities.

Fowler, via the Mirror (h/t Liverpool Echo), cannot comprehend how a player can be judged after playing just a few minutes on the pitch. The Liverpool legend believes such criticism comes with the price tag.

“It was ludicrous to think that Nunez was being doubted after playing just a few minutes against Manchester United and Crystal Palace on the tour to Asia.

“He got a taste of what any big-money signing faces in football these days if they’re not scoring in every game – but it’s ridiculous.”

Nunez has quickly turned the conversation around though. After scoring four goals against RB Leipzig, the pressure has come off a bit. The Uruguayan seems to have settled into the side now.

For any new signing, it’s difficult to come into a new team and play a different style. Especially for an attacker, a connection with other forwards is required. And that only comes through playing more games together.

Fowler, who spent eight years as the Reds’ striker, believes the only thing that matters is that the management is happy with the player.

“Nunez has come to Liverpool off the back of a fantastic campaign at Benfica, and Jurgen Klopp has bought him for the next few years, not for one pre-season.

“I’d seen that Klopp was perfectly happy with the way the lad has slotted in to the club and his performances in training. And if Klopp’s pleased that’s all that matters.”

The Liverpool legend is right. Nunez hasn’t just come to play two pre-season games. The 23-year-old has been signed with a view of hopefully keeping hold of him for years. And Reds fans will hope the Uruguayan fulfils his potential to lead our attack in the future.

With the departure of Sadio Mane, the frontline sees a shift with the arrival of Nunez. The player’s profile differs from the other attackers Jurgen Klopp has opted for over the years.
