Striker Darwin Nunez spoke to the club website liverpoolfc.com about his Community Shield delight and the season up ahead with the Reds after completing his transfer from SL Benfica for a fee that could rise to €100million with add-ons.
After scoring the decisive goal against Manchester City in the FA Community Shield final, his first competitive game for Liverpool, the 23-year-old Uruguayan exclaimed “it was a lovely feeling to win things.”
“When the goal went in, I didn’t quite know how to celebrate it. I pulled off my shirt and I started to celebrate with a huge release of adrenaline and fury. I was overjoyed at that moment and, as always, I dedicated the goal to my wife and my son.”
Nunez had a bumpy start to his career in Liverpool colours, not able to find the net in the first two preseason games, he bounced back against RB Leipzig scoring 4 past the German outfit in the second half. He recognises that times will not always be good for him at LFC, and he must prepare as such.
“It’s a long road ahead, which is also full of ups and downs, and that’s why I need to prepare well, because I want to keep on lifting trophies and winning lots of titles.”
Admitting that life in the Premier League is tough to adapt to, he sounds eager to start off smoothly, with the opening game against newly promoted side Fulham. Sounding fairly optimistic, he drew attention to being in “top form in body and mind” as well.
He was actively involved in our win against the Cityzens. We scored thrice, of which two goals were contributed by the former SL Benfica striker. His header hit Ruben Dias’ hand inside the box which led to Mohamed Salah’s 84th-minute goal.
Nunez then scored the third goal of the game when he found himself at the end of a neatly played cross from Fabio Carvalho. The Reds went on to win the game 3-1, with Julian Alvarez’s equaliser to cancel out Trent Alexander-Arnold’s opener proving nothing more than a consolation.
With a long season up ahead, fans would want Darwin to continue the good form he is in so that the team is in a good position, and possibly, get their hands onto more silverware than last season.
