According to The Express, Liverpool legend Ian Rush has advised Jurgen Klopp to have a look at the transfer market and try to rope in a midfielder given the club’s injury concerns in the department.
Along side starting midfielders Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara, the gaffer has very limited options to choose from for the match against Fulham today.
Only Harvey Elliot and James Milner are deemed to be fit among the rest of the midfielders with Naby Keita and Curtis Jones ruled out for the season opener. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been ruled out for a prolonged period of time owing to a hamstring injury in the pre-season.
Rush spoke about how Liverpool were “strong in the midfield department” and a new signing depends on the injury situations. Given that we will be competing on multiple fronts, it makes sense to add strength in depth.
“I don’t think they’re light on options, people get injured and that’s what you have to look at”
Klopp, recently spoke about how the club won’t look to sign midfielders this summer. But given how the situation is , it will become difficult for the club to charge for all trophies without having enough depth.
An injury crisis derailing the season is not new at Anfield. The loss of all frontline senior centre-backs in the 2020/21 campaign saw us struggle for massive periods of the season. Given our experience then, it makes sense for the club to prepare for any eventuality this summer.
After Fulham, Liverpool will next play, play Crystal Palace at Anfield followed by Manchester United away. Fans would certainly hope the gaffer signs a new midfielder, as the club is in need of one, given the starting midfield is also ageing.
