20-year-old Liverpool prospect joins SPL side on a season-long loan

Liverpool starlet Leighton Clarkson joins Aberdeen on a season-long loan

As per a report in BBC, Scottish side Aberdeen have signed young Liverpool midfielder Leighton Clarkson on a season-long loan. He becomes the club’s 11th sign of their summer transfer window, exponentially adding to their squad for this season.

The 20-year-old was out on loan last season too, playing for his home town club Blackburn Rovers. He made seven appearances in the Championship and did not hit the expected heights.

Clarkson played only 32 minutes of pre-season for Liverpool, doing so against Crystal Palace in Singapore. While moving to the Scottish Premier League is not the most glamorous, it could help ease him into senior football.

It was clear that the midfielder would either be loaned out if he wants first-team game time, or stay and play for the youth side at Merseyside, hoping for some minutes in cup competitions. The player has chosen the former as his option.

The youngster did once make a Champions League appearance for the Reds, when he started against Danish side FC Midtjylland in December 2020. The game ended one-all, with him playing the whole 90 minutes.

Aberdeen boss Jim Goodwin was happy to have the player on loan and praised his qualities. He also was grateful of Liverpool’s assistance in making this loan move happen and hopes that the FA Cup winners will see Aberdeen as a good club to send some of the young players for first-team experience.

He’s brave in possession and at the right times is willing to try the difficult pass which some don’t always have the ability or courage to attempt

Clarkson has great quality and high potential to be a decent midfielder at the top level. Physically diminutive, he can make the ball talk and dictate the game in the middle of the game.

All the parties – Liverpool, Aberdeen and the player himself would hope for a better loan spell in Scotland compared to last season. At 20, it is time that Clarkson reminded everyone of his abilities and made a case for himself.
