Speaking to Daily Mail (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool legend Phil Thompson sang high praises of new signing Fabio Carvalho and compared him to David Beckham.
The 19-year-old joined Liverpool this summer after a £5m plus add-ons deal with Fulham. The Portuguese-English attacking midfielder, who can also play the second striker and left-wing, racked up 11 goals and eight assists in all competitions last season. He was a crucial pivot in Fulham gaining promotion to the Premier League.
Thompson believes that Carvalho is going to be an excellent player at Liverpool and has backed him to succeed at Anfield.
“I’ve seen enough of him for Fulham but what he brings and what I think Liverpool look at, as much as the goals, are the assists”
Speaking highly of his assisting abilities, he compared that to David Beckham. He envisions the youngster developing into a star and complimented his abilities to make a difference.
“Yes, you can help people with those, but you need to have it like David Beckham, and that’s what Carvalho is; he’s going to be a star and he will astound everyone’’
He featured as a late substitution in both, Liverpool’s Community Shield win vs Manchester City and the Premier League opener, vs Fulham. With Harvey Elliot, Kaide Gordon and Calvin Ramsey also among the ranks, Liverpool have a good number of young players in their ranks..
With the heavy tag of being compared to Beckham on his back, Carvalho would be eager to perform at his level best for Liverpool. He first drew attention from Liverpool fans after he scored the solitary goal in Fulham’s 4-1 loss to City in last year’s FA Cup.
He has a good chance of showcasing his skill at the highest level this season. With Thiago Alcantara ruled out for six weeks, it gives Carvalho an opportunity to shine at the biggest stage. ‘
With Carvalho also showing glimpses of excellence in the pre-season, Liverpool will expect their starlet to step up and make himself count. The youngster has impressed so far and has already given us all a taste of his abilities.
