Liverpool superstar Thiago Alcantara limped off injured in the club’s Premier League opener against Fulham. He held his hamstring in the 51st minute and found it difficult to carry on as Harvey Elliot then entered the fold replacing the 31-year-old.
Reports from The Independent say that he is likely to miss four to six weeks due to the same. A tough game against Fulham saw our midfield get completely exposed and Thiago’s injury adds salt to the wounds.
Initial scans were further worrisome as no timeline could be adjourned to the extent of the injury. So, the problem is not as bad as apprehended earlier. Unfortunately, we will now have to negotiate the first few weeks of the campaign sans our best midfielder.
He will miss the fixtures against Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Newcastle United, Manchester United and Everton. While the Reds can make do, his absence will impact them being at their best.
The Spaniard has not had the best time dealing with injuries throughout his career. He has had an injury-laid time at Anfield as well. He had missed 21 games in his first season at Merseyside owing to injuries and illness. Nevertheless, he has always been very crucial to Liverpool every time he starts.
The new season has already seen a lot of Liverpool’s first team members sit out with injuries. Ibrahima Konate and Diogo Jota among others. In midfield, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had earlier been ruled out for a prolonged period of time owing to an injury in preseason.
Curtis Jones along with Naby Keita also only recently returned to training. This leaves virtually little midfield-depth, necessitating Jurgen Klopp and co to dip into the transfer market.
With or without reinforcements, Liverpool cannot let Thiago’s absence derail their campaign. The home clash against Crystal Palace next Monday should give us an idea of what to expect.
