Reliable journo provides a sobering update on Liverpool’s pursuit of midfield star

Liverpool are not interested in signing Matheus Nunes this summer

According to Paul Joyce of The Times (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool will not be a summer deal for Sporting CP star Matheus Nunes in the summer transfer window.

Premier League rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers are also interested in signing the midfielder. Unfortunately, they can now breathe a sigh of relief with the Reds no more in the running.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed a brilliant spell with Sporting CP and is one of the rising stars in European football. A dynamic entity in the middle of the park, he would have been an inspired addition to the Liverpool roster.

The injuries to Thiago Alcantara, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain would have given Liverpool to get Nunes on board. The club would have benefitted from his style of play; creating chances from midfield while also maintaining defensive solidity.

The wing-backs form the backbone of Liverpool’s attacking system and tend to create several of Liverpool’s goalscoring chances. Besides that, diagonal balls from the centreback to the winger creates a good number of opportunities to get in behind opposition backlines. Nunes’ ability to carry the ball would have introduced another haymaker in the centre.

After Phillipe Coutinho’s departure to Barcelona, the chances created from the central midfield saw a steep decline. In addition to that, the likes of Henderson and Milner among others are not getting any younger.

For a player of Nunes’ calibre, a move to a top European club anytime soon should not be ruled out. He also has a £51m release clause in his current contract, a fair price given his potential.

Liverpool will do well to add some dynamism to their midfield. Come to the end of the season, it could prove to be the difference between being crowned champions or falling short once again.
