Jurgen Klopp opens up on unsavoury eventuality ahead of Man United protests

Jurgen Klopp wants Liverpool to be awarded the three points in case the Manchester United fixture is abandoned

According to The Guardian, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes that his side should be awarded the forfeit in case the fixture against Manchester United is postponed due to the Red Devils’ fans protesting against their owners.

The corresponding fixture in the 2020/21 season was postponed after fans broke into Old Trafford. The game was scheduled to be played behind closed doors, but United fans entered the stadium protesting against their owners. Liverpool won the rearranged fixture 4-2 after it was pushed ahead by two weeks.

There have been multiple demonstrations against the Glazers from United’s fans and their supporters’ group are planning one more ahead of the Liverpool game. Klopp believes Liverpool should not be paying for the Red Devils’ problems.

“I really hope it will not happen but if it does happen I think we should get the points. We have nothing to do with the situation and if the supporters want the game not happening then we cannot just rearrange the game again and fit it in somewhere in an incredibly busy season.”

Klopp’s claims come at a time when he is already facing enough criticism for his earlier comments on Fulham. He believed that the pitch at Craven Cottage was “dry”. His statements are often misinterpreted, but this one was pretty straightforward.

“But in a situation like this, the other team should get the points because they have nothing to do with it. We have prepared for the game.”

The football season is very long and the players need adequate rest before games. A reschedule will hurt the preparations the Reds have done and would jolt their campaign. With a World Cup scheduled in November later this year, most players are set to play numerous games this year. Without adequate rest days, it will become very exhausting for the players.

For a team like Liverpool, currently having very less squad depth, this might come to haunt us towards the end of the season.

In case Liverpool are handed the walkover, it would be the first time since 1992 that the Red Devils have gone on to lose their first three Premier League fixtures. But for Liverpool though, they would be desperate to play and prove a point against their arch-rivals after having a shaky start to the season.
