If Arsenal go on to beat Manchester United today at Old Trafford, Liverpool will be nine points off from the top of the table. According to Gabby Agbonlahor, the title should be the least of the concerns for the Reds, who are just ‘Top 4 Contenders’ presently. (h/t Liverpool Echo)
Moreover, Liverpool have just accumulated half of the possible collectable points and sit at 7th in the table. The Reds need to get back on winning ways as soon as possible to pose a threat. Agbonlahor was not convinced of the Reds’ performance this season. He believes that they are not competing for the title.
“100 per cent. This is not a battle for the title. Liverpool, for me, are not fighting for the Premier League title this season.”
“There is something missing in that side. That is the sort of game where you would rely on Mane to come up with some sort of brilliance and make a goal. Mane’s runs would open up more space for Salah.”
The former Aston Villa player believes that the Reds miss the presence of Sadio Mane, whose “runs would open more space for Salah”. Ironically for him, Luis Diaz has made the second most runs off the ball this season, coming short of Kai Havertz of Chelsea. The Colombian has 35.5 runs per 90 to amass 103 in total.
Besides, his comments may be coming from a place of bias. Not very long ago, Jurgen Klopp called out Agbonlahor for his criticism of Manchester United a few weeks ago. The former Watford player called Liverpool’s rivals “amateur” which did not go down well with the German.
But from a Liverpool perspective, it becomes extremely crucial to get back on winning terms as soon as possible to actually pose a threat. Dropping nine of a possible 18 points, it is not exactly a dream start for the Merseysiders.
The former Aston Villa captain believes that Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are in a better position than Liverpool and have the “winning mentality” the Reds are lacking currently.
“They are fighting to stay in the top four because Arsenal are on it. Spurs are on it. They know how to win games. They have that winning mentality. There is something missing in that side.”
Agbonlahor has often been in the news for his eery comments and has been a bit on the loose while talking about certain teams. Hence, Liverpool need not pay any heed to his comments, and Jurgen Klopp should certainly not give him the attention he wants in any press conference.
