Update on Premier League fixtures for Gameweek 8 as Liverpool vs Chelsea under threat of postponement

Journalist Richard Buxton via Twitter gave updates on the Premier League fixtures for September’s second week following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, which includes Liverpool vs Chelsea on September 18.

The Royal Family confirmed the Queen’s death on September 8th. It raised speculation over major events in the country. A ten-day mourning period included Liverpool facing Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. Correspondingly, this fixture now stands postponed.

An official statement from the Premier League on September 9th announced the postponement of all fixtures for the weekend, including the Leeds United vs Nottingham Forest game, on Monday evening.

With the date for the Queen’s funeral yet to be announced, Liverpool’s fixture against Chelsea on 18th September is under threat of being postponed. The entire gameweek 8, for that matter, could be shifted to another date.

It is expected that the funeral shall take place roughly 10 days after the public announcement of her death. Hence, the fixtures on 18-19th September are also subject to postponement.

Buxton provided a date of either 17th or 18th January 2023 to play the deferred fixtures via Twitter. A postponement of Liverpool’s trip to the Blues will mean the Reds will feature in the Premier League only in October.

As far as the UEFA Champions League is concerned, there is no news of any postponement of the competition. So accordingly, the Reds’ trip to Amsterdam to face Ajax will go ahead on the 14th of September.

“UEFA have just released media schedule for next week so assumption is business as usual from their standpoint”

With no Premier League action for a while for the Reds, it will give them a break to introspect on what has gone wrong so far in the season and try to bounce back.

Fans would miss regular football if the game against the Blues is also postponed but at such a time, sports can afford to take a backseat and resume when the conditions are right.
