According to Spanish newspaper El Pais (h/t Liverpool Echo), Jurgen Klopp’s signing of Darwin Nunez was a major err. The outlet calls it the “biggest miscalculation” of the German’s tenure at Merseyside.
The 23-year-old had a good start to his Liverpool career, scoring against Manchester City in the FA Community Shield. He was also on the scoresheet against Fulham on the opening matchday of the Premier League. The dream start saw a hurdle as the Uruguayan received a red card for violent conduct against Crystal Palace.
Nevertheless, the Spanish news outlet believes Klopp made a mistake by ruling out the ‘big signings’ of Son Heung-Min, Richarlison and Robert Lewandowski. It is natural to think that if the club had opted for any one of these three, our standings could have been better than what they are now.
The South Korean international and the Poland captain could have had a good time playing under Jurgen Klopp. Lewandowski’s relationship with the Liverpool gaffer goes back to their Borussia Dortmund days wherein Lewa was one of the main forces of Klopp’s side.
Son, on the other hand, from what it appears, seems to have a good relationship with the Liverpool gaffer. The former Leverkusen winger had been subject to a Liverpool move earlier in the summer. The gaffer wanted Son on board as a Sadio Mane replacement, who moved to Bayern Munich.
Richarlison though, would not be signing the Reds fans would have fancied. The Brazilian, other than having featured for Everton has been on the receiving end of slack from a few Liverpool fans on social media.
More recently, the current Tottenham Hotspur striker mocked Liverpool via Twitter after the Reds missed out on the league title by a single point.
But with all things said and done, Klopp decided on signing Darwin. Time will tell, and not a Spanish news outlet, whether the German was wrong in spending a big fee to secure the services of the former Benfica man.
This is very early to judge his career. He wasted three games sitting out on the sidelines due to a red card while our service from midfield fails to flatter. When things are going well for is with regards to the fitness of our best midfielders, perhaps then we can get a full picture of the Uruguay international and his abilities.
