According to Italian news outlet Calciomercato (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have re-ignited their interest in PSV Eindhoven’s Ivorian midfielder Ibrahim Sangare. The 24-year-old was subject to interest from Liverpool earlier in the summer.
West Ham United and AC Milan are also doing the rounds for Sangare’s signature. The defensive midfielder put a standstill to all rumours linking him with a summer move by signing a new contract with the Dutch outfit lasting until 2027.
Earlier in the summer, Manchester United and Chelsea were the front-runners to sign the former Toulouse midfielder. The Reds could still venture a move for the midfielder come the January transfer window.
This season though, Liverpool have come under scrutiny for not signing a quality midfielder. On deadline day, though, the Reds managed to get on board Juventus’ Arthur Melo on loan with an option to buy.
Having said that, Sangare is a defensive midfielder, which Liverpool might benefit from. It will provide cover for Fabinho, who seems to be off the pace this season, and he could also be deployed in a double pivot with the Brazil international.
In 29 league appearances last season, the Ivorian amassed a total of three goals and two assists. Sangare’s physicality makes it tough to get the ball off his feet easily and he is a force to consider when defending as well.
Sangare can also play box-to-box, much like Georginio Wijnaldum, who is not yet replaced at Liverpool since he left for Paris Saint-Germain. Moreover, Fabinho could also do with some competition in his position.
At 24, Sangare would also inject some much-needed air of youth into our ageing midfield. Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones, and Harvey Elliott are all good prospects but in Sangare, we can get a player who is a natural midfielder and can contribute in a major way off the ball.
