According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg received a one-match ban along with Newcastle United’s Sports Scientist Daniel Hodges. The pair additionally saw fines of a combined amount of £13,000 pounds following their violent conduct on the sidelines during the teams’ fixture at Anfield.
The Reds pulled off a narrow 2-1 win against the Magpies at Anfield earlier this season. Fabio Carvalho‘s effort from nearly a yard from the goal line saw Liverpool win the game deep into stoppage time.
As is the case with last-minute winners and equalisers, the players and the dugout broke into a very heated celebration. There existed a lot of controversy with the added time, as play went on till 90+8 minutes whereas only five minutes were added on.
Nick Pope’s time down on the pitch extended up to three minutes into extra time which saw the play go on till when it actually did. In the aftermath of Liverpool’s goal, Achterberg understandably became overexcited.
Newcastle’s dugout was obviously not too excited with their counterpart’s over-the-top celebrations and an altercation held up just a few seconds into Carvalho scoring the goal. The Dutchman “appeared to stick two fingers up” towards the Magpies’ bench, receiving a fine of £7000.
Achterberg shall have to wait until Liverpool’s fixture against Brighton and Hove Albion on 1st October to serve his one-match-ban. Two of the Reds’ fixtures against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea were postponed earlier this due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
Even though Achterberg would not be as commanding from the sidelines as opposed to Jurgen Klopp or Pep Lijnders but still, he will be a miss for the Reds. He has been an integral part of Liverpool’s backroom staff since joining from Tranmere Rovers in 2009.
