“At their best” – Carragher thinks that Liverpool can still bounce back this season

Jamie Carragher thinks that Liverpool can still bounce back this season

Speaking on The Overlap alongside broadcast partner Gary Neville as quoted by Liverpool Echo, Jamie Carragher was of the opinion that the Reds could still bounce back from a disjoint start and that it is too early to write them off.

Gary Neville seemed to suggest that he will not be surprised to see Manchester City winning this Premier League season by a landslide especially considering the kind of start that Jurgen Klopp’s men have had this season.

Liverpool have been far from their best this season, struggling to get going both in the Premier League and the Champions League. Except for a 9-0 thumping of Bournemouth earlier this season, even their wins have been far from convincing.

Jurgen Klopp has a job on his hands

The Reds needed last-minute goals against both Newcastle United and Ajax to get them over the line. For a team that has been unbelievably consistent in recent seasons, this seems like a major drop-off.

Manchester City meanwhile have continued to march on like a well-driven machine, further spurred on by the incredible form of their new signing, Erling Haaland. This has prompted early talks of the Manchester club being title winners this season.

It might be too early to arrive at any conclusions. Arsenal and Spurs are going very strong in the PL until now whilst it might not be long before a team of Liverpool’s quality bounce back up from the dud.

Carragher went on to claim that although Manchester City might be favourites, he expects Liverpool to bounce back, especially with Virgil van Dijk fit. The Dutchman was out for the majority of the 2020-21 season, where the Reds finished third with 69 points.

“If you get them [Liverpool] at their best, at the very sort of start at the season, and don’t forget, every season van Dijk has been at Liverpool a full season, Liverpool have got over 90 points and the other thing is that Liverpool have got sort of three or four top players.”

For a team with the kind of players that Liverpool have, and with a manager like Jurgen Klopp at the helm, it will come as no surprise if the Reds bounce back and pose a serious threat to challenge for the title.
