Report: Liverpool have spent £56million over the odds on transfers in the past decade

According to an exclusive report by CIES Football Observatory’s (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have spent an estimated figure of £56million over the odds on transfers in the past decade.

This puts them ninth on the list of Premier League clubs who have overspent in the past decade and 19th in Europe. Whilst it is not really a huge fee, it is surprising considering how well the Reds have been going about their business in recent years.

It is being claimed that the Reds have made 33 major signings in the last decade with a total expenditure of €1.004billion

compared to an estimated player value of €948million. This means that the Reds have spent 6% over the estimated value.

This is still better than most other top Premier League clubs which is evidence of the smart business that the Reds have been carrying out in recent years. Arsenal, Manchester United, Everton and Chelsea have all performed worse.

Man United in particular have a ridiculous overspending fee, with the Red Devils having gone €238million more than what they were estimated to have spent on transfers. It shows how atrocious the Manchester club have been in recent years.

Surprisingly though, a club who have been known for spending a lot of money is Manchester City but the Cityzens have surprisingly done better than Liverpool according to the observations at least.

Anyone who has been following the Reds in recent years will know that they have been very shrewd with their acquisitions. Even when they sold Philippe Coutinho for all that money, they did not go mad in the transfer market.

They went on to sign two of arguably Liverpool’s most influential players in recent seasons in Virgil Van Dijk and Alisson Becker. The duo have been a rock at the back and the Reds have struggled in their absence.

It is a good thing that the Reds have been solid in the transfer market with more hits than misses, and let’s hope they continue being so in the future. But sometimes, you have to pay over the top for quality, so hopefully, the board knows when to make that distinction.
