Former Liverpool midfielder via his Twitter account has been left surprised over the fact that there is not a single attacking player in the top five of most goal contributions in the Premier League till now.
It is somewhat reflective of the form that we have shown and the results that have occurred with our striker failing to fire on all cylinders, except against the 9-0 thrashing of Bournemouth.
This is a stark contrast to last season where our front three Sadio Mane, Mohammad Salah and Diogo Jota had a total of 78 goal contributions to their name.
Mane had 20 goal contributions in his last season at the club while Mo Salah had 37 goal contributions and eventually won the Golden Boot whereas new boy Jota was highly impressive in notching 21 goal contributions in the Premier League in his debut season.
If compared to other key players of the 2021/22 season, Tottenham’s Heung-min Son and Harry Kane had 32 and 26 goal contributions respectively while Manchester City’s main man Kevin De Bruyne had 23 goal contributions.
Hence, the attacking players at Liverpool were higher than all their major competitors and were probably the reason we were competing for a historic quadruple till the last moments of the season.
Bring it back to the current season and the leading goal contribution has come from Roberto Firmino with six goal contributions followed by Luis Diaz and Mo Salah with four goals each.
Liverpool’s main attack over the years has come through its fullbacks Trent Alexander Arnold and Andy Robertson who have developed a formidable partnership over the years.
Take it last year and the pair had an impressive 14 and 13
goal contributions respectively as compared to the slow start to the current season where Trent and Robertson have one goal contribution each in the first six Premier League games.Hence, Jose Enrique is correct in acting surprised by the fall in form of all the key players simultaneously and roughly shows the reason we are behind the top order.
The form of key players needs to improve drastically and soon for us to have any chance of mounting a challenge to our rivals and hopefully the international break will provide the players with the much-needed reflection to kickstart their campaign.
