Liverpool could receive financial boost as European giants owe the Reds £12.3m for past transfer

Barcelona owe Liverpool £12.3 million for the 2018 transfer of Brazilian star Philippe Coutinho

Liverpool are set for a financial boost as Barcelona owe the Red £12.3 million for the transfer of Philippe Coutinho in January 2018, according to Catalan journalist Laia Tudel via Barca Universal on Twitter (h/t Express).

The Merseysiders had sold the Brazilian for £142 million, including add-ons. The deal included payments of £4.4 million

for every 15 appearances the 30-year-old made for the Blaugrana.

While Coutinho has since left Barcelona for Aston Villa, the Spanish giants still need to settle their accounts with Liverpool. The Anfield side are yet to receive the full payment.

Barcelona are also behind on payments to Juventus for Miralem Pjanic. The 32-year-old made his way to the Blaugrana as Arthur Melo joined the Old Lady. The Bosnian has since moved on from the Spotify Camp Nou. The midfielder is currently on loan with the Reds.

Coutinho had a fruitful spell at Liverpool. The 30-year-old became a crowd favourite during his time in Merseyside. The Brazilian was signed from Inter Milan in the 2012/13 campaign.

In Coutinho’s almost five-year spell with Liverpool, the Brazilian featured 201 times in all competitions. The 30-year-old scored 54 goals and provided 45 assists for the Reds.

However, Coutinho has not been able to emulate the form he showed at Liverpool. Since then, the Brazilian has seen his stock tumble. He now plays under former teammate Steven Gerrard at Villa Park.

Hopefully, Barcelona will end up paying the amount to the Red in the coming months. Fans feel Liverpool need to dip into the market in the upcoming transfer window to reinforce the squad.
