Jose Enrique is critical of Liverpool ace Darwin Nunez in spite of impressing vs Arsenal

Darwin Nunez was one of the few positive takeaways from Liverpool’s 3-2 loss against Arsenal at The Emirates on Sunday. The Uruguayan scored his first league goal for Liverpool in more than two months, and it was refreshing to see him get on the scoresheet after such a long time amidst constant criticism.

Roberto Firmino was Liverpool’s second goal-scorer but a late penalty took the game away from the Reds. But speaking of Nunez, his movement was extremely good and had a few pops at goal.

However, Darwin’s performance against the Gunners, former Liverpool left-back Jose Enrique remains unimpressed. The Spaniard, via Twitter, was rather critical of Nunez’s game on the day.

Nunez shows signs of improvement

His tweet suggested that apart from taking his goal, Nunez was probably not doing as much as Enrique expected him to. Enrique clearly appears to have been the one watching another game.

This comment by Enrique probably comes from a place of ignorance. Apart from the obvious contribution, Darwin attempted numerous runs and tried breaking between the Arsenal backline. Moreover, with his sharp movements, he opened up space for others to exploit as well.

Probably the fact that our most creative player, Trent Alexander-Arnold saw himself subbed off at half-time, Nunez’s runs went unnoticed by the majority of the players. He clearly caused the Arsenal backline problems and could have on another day helped decide the game.

Takehiro Tomiyasu did a fantastic job keeping Mohamed Salah quiet on the night. Besides, Liverpool need to move on from this game and look into the future to see where they can turn around their season

With the goal he took, Darwin’s confidence would have increased and he will hopefully aspire for more in the future. Regardless, he will be in for a much tougher battle in the league next time around when the Reds face Manchester City.
