In what is a major blow to Liverpool this season, Luis Diaz is ruled out until after the World Cup (via Ian Doyle of Liverpool Echo on Twitter). The 25-year-old was one of the Reds’ better players this season. With him ruled out, things certainly do not look good for the team in the near future.
The winger came off the pitch moments before the first half ended against Arsenal. A tackle from Thomas Partey caught him on the knee and Diaz continued to receive treatment on the pitch. However, he could not carry on and eventually made way for Roberto Firmino.
Up to that point, Diaz was a constant menace for Arsenal’s backline and he also provided the assist for Darwin Nunez’s first equaliser. Moreover, he was noticed exiting from The Emirates with a knee brace.
Immediately after the match, Jurgen Klopp provided updates on Diaz’s situation stating that the situation was “not good”. In addition, this was not the only injury concern for the Reds in that particular game.
Joe Gomez replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold at the 45-minute mark with the latter twisting his ankle in a challenge with Gabriel Martinelli. The extent of Trent’s injury is presently unknown.
With Liverpool’s poor form already being a major concern this season, the injury situation to two of the Reds’ best players adds fuel to the already blazing fire. Having said that, Liverpool do not have a recognised left-winger to act as a backup for Diaz.
One could expect Fabio Carvalho to put in the shift in that position but the youngster could also only do so much with his level of experience playing the game, and that too in a position he is not so familiar with.
Gaffer Jurgen Klopp will certainly need to change his tactics to get the most out of his currently available team. With tough fixtures against Manchester City and West Ham later this month, things are definitely inopportune for the Reds.
