Liverpool midfielder among only two players from PL clubs in latest Golden Boy nominee list

Fabio Carvalho is the only Liverpool player among the latest nominees for the 2022 Golden Boy award

Liverpool’s Fabio Carvalho is the only player from the club and one of two from the Premier League to feature in the latest Golden Boy nominee list. Leeds United’s Wilfried Gnonto is the only other player from England’s top division.

The list was down to its current size of 20 from the original 100 nominees back in September. It is subject to confinement furthermore post the current round of voting until October. November is when the award ceremony will take place, in Roma, Italy,

The list of 40 also featured Harvey Elliott. But since he did not make the final 20, that leaves only Carvalho from the Reds in the running for the annual accolade that recognises the achievements of players under the age of 21 in European football.

Speaking of the Portuguese, he had a breakthrough season with Fulham last year. The attacking midfielder scored 11 goals and secured eight assists from just 38 games across all competitions. He was a major contributor to Fulham gaining promotion to the Premier League.

In August of 2021, Carvalho was the PFA Player of the Month in the Championship. He also got a place in the PFA Team of the Year for the Championship last season. He is showing all the signs of a bright future in his brief time with Liverpool until now as well.

Although, with Jude Bellingham and a few other established European-level players on the list, the chances of Fabio returning back to Merseyside with the award are slim. However, if he performs as he has been for the next year, he could well and truly clinch the award next season.

The basic criterion to win the award is to be under 21 years of age. Pedri won the Golden Boy last time around, and the inaugural winner of the prize was Rafael van der Vaart.

Showing all the signs of a bright future, Carvalho would hope to grow on the same graph he is envisioned to grow on. Alongside Harvey Elliott, both of them shall hopefully transition into becoming top players for the club.
