Jurgen Klopp could be in the Liverpool dugout despite receiving a red card against Manchester City
Liverpool handed Manchester City their first league loss since February. A statement 1-0 win over the reigning champions during a period wherein the Reds are not playing as well as they usually do is something noteworthy.
However, late into the game with four minutes to go for the 90, Liverpool gaffer Jurgen Klopp was on the receiving end of a red card from referee Anthony Taylor for “excessive appealing”. In what appeared to be Bernardo Silva trying to pull Mohamed Salah’s shirt, the referee did not stop play which probably set off Klopp.
It seems that he went too far with his appeal, and as a result, the official forced him to leave the touchline of the match. However, the foul was pretty blatant and it could have been an error on Taylor’s part for not identifying the situation.
Klopp could feature vs West Ham
One could argue that the foul made more sense in rugby than football, but the referee felt otherwise. However, despite the red card, Klopp could still feature in the dugout against West Ham United this Thursday. (h/t The Mirror)
Unlike players, managers are not subject to an immediate suspension and are free to appear in the dugout. A final decision will stand only after the submission of an official report prepared by the match referee to the FA. The committee shall then proceed to assess the report and make a decision on whether the suspension stands valid or void.
Upon the officials’ conclusion that a charge ought to be against Klopp, the German coach will be subject to a fine and a one-match ban. Otherwise, the German will be free to resume touchline duties.
As earlier seen in the league this season, Tottenham Boss Antonio Conte and then- Chelsea gaffer Thomas Tuchel’s red cards were overturned after the FA’s interference in the issue. A similar case could ensue in Klopp’s scenario.
