“Especially children”- Newcastle manager takes a swipe at Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp after recent red card

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe says he would not behave like Jurgen Klopp on the touchline after the German’s red card against Manchester City

Following Jurgen Klopp’s red card against Manchester City for “excessive appealing”, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe told the press that he would refrain from behaving like the German on the touchline in those situations.

Referee Anthony Taylor displayed disinterest in a blatant foul by Bernardo Silva on Mohamed Salah. Klopp on the sidelines was livid, making his feelings on Taylor’s inaction clear. One thing led to another and eventually ended up with the German receiving his marching orders.

One would believe that Klopp was in his right to engage with the ref as Salah was a constant target for Bernardo Silva, who later appeared to elbow the Egyptian as well. Newcastle United’s manager, however, disagrees.

Here is what Howe told reporters about the same (h/t Daily Mail):

‘‘I am very aware that I am going to be looked at by millions of people, especially children, and I think you have an expectation to make sure the game is upheld in the right way and with the right spirit.’’

Howe would not express emotions like Klopp

Of course, there are millions of people watching you Eddie, but it is hard to control emotions when your team is playing the Champions of England and things don’t go your way. In the same way, there are millions, including children who share the same passion for the club as Jurgen does, and would probably react in the same way if they were in the situation.

In the Premier League, where the margin for error is so low, emotions would obviously run high, and we could just conclude that Howe and Klopp express their reactions in different ways.

Meanwhile, West Ham United manager David Moyes believes that Klopp was correct and backed his colleague. Clearly what the German feels isn’t a fancy of his imagination.

Moreover, it is a bit ironic on Howe’s part to talk about setting an example, as, during his time as Bournemouth manager, he was subject to reprimand by the FA for his comments towards a match official. Nevertheless, what he believes in stands true for him, and so is the case for Klopp.
