In the 11 appearances that Joe Gomez has made for Liverpool across all competition this season, most have come at centre-back. In the two games he played as a right-back filling in for the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold, against Rangers and Arsenal, he was phenomenal.
Following injuries to Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip, Gomez naturally had a substantial run of games and he has been impressive in. Bar one average performance against West Ham United, the English centre-back has been up to the task..
Keeping Erling Haaland in check to secure the team a clean sheet against an in-form Manchester City, the former Charlton Athletic defender was probably Liverpool’s best outfield player that night. The gaffer would be happy to have such a versatile player at his disposal, who can effectively play multiple roles in defence.
Speaking of his abilities to play multiple roles, here is what Klopp said about Gomez to liverpoolfc.com:
“But in the moment, yes, it’s perfect for him because he can show – in two different positions in which he can play both on an exceptional level – that he’s an extremely good player.”
Gomez has shown that in Trent’s absence on the right side of defence he can put in a shift and do a good job. Even though his crossing abilities are not the same as the Liverpool academy graduate, Gomez more than makes up for it with his defensive solidity.
Moreover, his partnership with Virgil van Dijk back in the 2019/20 season won Liverpool their first Premier League title after 30 years, hence it is not something new for Gomez to star in central defence.
Although his time at Liverpool has been injury laden, the 25-year-old has made efforts to come back into the starting XI and is consistently putting in great performances to cement his place into the lineup. Very recently, he penned a long-term deal
with the club as well, showcasing his commitment to the Reds’ cause.Following an average outing recently against West Ham in the league, Gomez would hope to put that behind him and try to give his best shot against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
