Sammy Lee believes Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold will make the England squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Liverpool were competing for an unprecedented quadruple last season and though the team came up short and ended up winning two trophies, it received a lot of praise for the manner in which it fought in all competitions.

One player who particularly was special for us last season was Trent Alexander-Arnold who was instrumental in his role as a chief creator for the team. In a total of 47 appearances made last season, the right-back had impressive 21-goal contributions.

Trent would have been expected to impress for England at this year’s World Cup FIFA World Cup in November. However, Gareth Southgate has a gold mine at the right-back position with so many world-class fullbacks to choose from.

When the player was left out of the squad of England’s recent Nations League matches, it created speculation that the defender might not be in Southgate’s plans for the World Cup.

Now with Reece James injured, an opportunity has been presented to Trent to give one final push. Speaking to No Tippy Tappy Football (h/t Liverpool Echo, Lee who made 283 appearances for the club believes that the right-back will go to the World Cup and prove his doubters wrong.

“He is one of Liverpool’s most influential players.

I know there’s a question mark against him for his defending, but we’ll have him in the squad and we have him to change games. I understand the reservations about him, but I watch him week in, week out.

“I think he’ll get to the tournament and will be looking to prove to people that he is worthy of his place there.”

Trent’s position for a claim in the World Cup squad is not confirmed and he would need to put in some impressive performances in the remaining fixtures before the tournament to truly cement his place.

One of the factors of the loss of his form can be attributed to the fact that the whole team is not performing well in general and that can impact performances where one’s mistakes are judged more harshly.

Trent provides a different dimension to the national team and can act as a solid weapon in breaking teams down, even if he is called to do that from the bench.

There are no clear indicators that he would be the first choice right back for the national team but not taking the defender altogether in the World Cup squad would be a foolish move and certainly would be disadvantageous to England.

The last date for submission of official national squads for the World Cup is 13 November and with six games in between such periods, Trent needs to bring back his form of the past and remind the critics of his talent and ability.
