Following the departure of Sadio Mane to FC Bayern Munich and the injury to Diogo Jota coupled with Darwin Nunez’s disruptive start, a wonderful opportunity was presented to youngster Harvey Elliott to stake a claim in the Liverpool starting team.
Elliott rose to prominence with his time at Fulham when he started representing the first team aged 16 with his performances drawing the attention of many top clubs.
Eventually, Liverpool succeeded in convincing the teenager to continue his career at Anfield and he was signed in 2019 for a fee of £4million in line with Liverpool’s strategy for the acquisition of talent with world-class potential for the future.
Soon after his signing, Elliott was sent on loan to Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers where he played 42 games
and contributed to seven goals and eleven assists, showing every one of his immense potential.Liverpool fans were aware of the special talent that we have and last season was all about the teenager settling into the foundations of the team and getting important minutes under his belt.
No one would have expected Elliott to be a starter come the start of the season but with injuries and a lack of personnel, he was presented with a wonderful opportunity and he has taken it with both hands.
The attacking midfielder has seemingly fit into the team and while speaking in an interview as quoted by Liverpool Echo, Jurgen Klopp reserved special praise for the player who has been one of the better players in a dismal season for us.
“Now in a team which is not in a perfect moment he has a really consistent season so far. Good for him and very good for us as well that he is now scoring as well. It’s a thing he has to involve in his game, definitively.”
“This one [against Ajax] I didn’t expect with the right foot but in general scoring goals must be part of each offensive player on the pitch. That’s what he is now slowly, but surely doing. So, yeah, really good what he is doing so far.”
Elliott has the best personnel around him to develop his game over the season which already has seen him make huge strides towards developing his immense potential.
A goal against Ajax in the UEFA Champions League will give him a major boost of confidence and provide Klopp with one less thing to worry about ahead of a congestive run of fixtures.
He has scary potential. Those who watched him at Fulham would have seen his current form coming from a mile away. He is coming of age slowly and there can be nothing better for our side than to have a new solution to our midfield problems from within the squad.
