Jurgen Klopp gives his verdict on Liverpool vs Leeds United as proud home record comes to an end

Liverpool gaffer Jurgen Klopp gives his verdict on the Reds’ loss to Leeds United

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has opened up on his side’s defeat to Leeds United at Anfield, a result that adds fresh insult to Liverpool’s flagging league campaign.

With the shock loss, Virgil van Dijk‘s unbeaten record at Anfield came to an end. The run lasted 70 games across four and a half years.

Joe Gomez’s wayward pass back to where he believed the keeper stood saw the ball go straight to Rodrigo who had the easiest of tasks putting the ball in the net. However, Mohamed Salah equalised within 10 minutes. A late winner from Crysencio Summerville snatched the three points for Leeds, leaving Anfield stunned.

Liverpool had 22 attempts on goal. Illan Meslier decided to have the game of his life against the Reds, saving anything from going past him. Taking nothing away from his performance, the Merseysiders should have finished better and have only themselves top blame.

Speaking to Sky Sports (via BBC), here is what the gaffer said:

“We scored the equaliser but for some reason it didn’t give us the security back. We struggled to control the game and gave too many balls away. The boys tried, we had good possession and had big chances but, in the end, if it is 1-1 and you defend the situation around the second goal like this, you leave everything open.”

The Reds had multiple chances and got away with a few as well. Maybe it was Meslier’s great performance, the Reds could not see through maximum points in this fixture. The form is a great concern presently, with Liverpool losing back-to-back Premier League games against sides we are expected to beat.

Frustrating Result for the Reds

It was a frustrating game to watch, and maybe the players could have done with a bit of motivation from the crowd as well. Anfield has not been the same this season, and that is also a huge factor in Liverpool’s form.

Nevertheless, without giving excuses, this was a pretty poor performance from the Reds and the players are obviously over-run at the moment. Few are not 100% fit, the other few are not playing at their best as well.

Injuries have also helped derail the Reds’ season so far. We can only hope that the international break comes as soon as possible for Liverpool so that there is time to rest and regroup.

More Liverpool News

There is a lot to be overhauled at the club, come the transfer window. Players such as Fabinho have coasted through based on their reputations and have not turned up at all this season/ Klopp will need to make some tough decisions before it gets too far.
