Liverpool player Arthur Melo, on loan from Juventus, has not had a great time with the Reds. The player, on the road to achieving match fitness, saw himself badly injured and is out at least until early next year.

Such is his fate that under Massimiliano Allegri, he was left out of Juve’s squad for the pre-season as well. Hence, Arthur was not ready for the rigours of the Premier League. However, his commitment towards fitness was something which he earned a lot of praise for.

The former Barcelona midfielder has not featured for the Reds’ senior team after his 13-minute appearance against Napoli in the UEFA Champions League on 8th September. He played for the U21 squad for a while before the injury.

No Merry for Melo at Merseyside

Arthur was part of the matchday squad against Everton, Brighton & Hove Albion and the first-leg fixture against Ajax Amsterdam but remained an unused substitute in all mentioned games. With his latest injury situation, he will have to wait until 2023 to return to the field.

Further assessment and waiting until January to take a decision on Arthur and his loan situation can prove to be a bigger gamble than buying Arthur ever was. The player was bought as backup, and to be fair, there is not any substantial backup available at the club at this moment in time as well.

Hence, buying a midfielder come the January transfer window should be the top priority for Jurgen Klopp irrespective of whether Arthur is back to optimum fitness or not. Ideally, the Reds, only for the sake or mistake of getting Melo on board, as you may call it, should try him out for a game or few when he returns and make the assessment later on.

It was going out on a limb to buy an injury-prone player, albeit on loan, as a backup for the starters. And that too, on deadline day. Until now, this piece of business is seeming like a very poor decision from the management.

However, redemption still awaits the 26-year-old. If he could somehow prove his worth in the remaining six months of his contract after returning from injury, the Reds could possibly trigger the clause of £32m to make the deal permanent.

At the moment, the Reds are crying out loud for a midfielder to provide backup and possibly even start games instead of the current lot of injury-prone players in the middle of the park. Only time will tell whether Liverpool take the wise decision of signing a midfielder in January or not.
