“That’s why”- Liverpool legend reveals he left the club after receiving ‘Cristiano Ronaldo treatment’

Robbie Fowler talks about his exit from Liverpool after receiving ‘Cristiano Ronaldo treatment’

Liverpool icon Robbie Fowler had two stints at the club. Eight years from 1993 until 2001 and another season and a half from January 2006 to July 2007. In 369 appearances for the club, Fowler scored 183 goals and got 49 assists.

Robbie saw himself a nickname, “God” amongst the Kopites during his initial spell at the club. During that time he reached the iconic status he currently holds at the club. However, the subject of his departure is something the fans would want more closure about.

Fans would not have been too pleased to see a club legend depart Anfield, that too to a direct rival. Even though we still had fit Michael Owen, God’s departure was a difficult one to take.

Drawing inferences to Cristiano Ronaldo and the Portuguese international’s situation at the club with new manager Erik ten Hag, Fowler said that a similar fallout with then-Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier made him make the switch from Merseyside to the Midlands.

Speaking to FairBettingSites (h/t The Mirror), here is what Fowler had to say :

“I have been in this situation where I believed, without being egotistical, I was the best striker but for whatever reason, managers pick a team without you in it.”

“That’s why I left Liverpool for Leeds. I felt for me and my game, as much as I love Liverpool, I needed to play football. I felt I was forced out of the club by not playing but I needed to go and play for my own sanity.”

Ronaldo is not the first-choice starter for United under the new manager and hence, Fowler, being in a similar situation where even after being the best striker at the club, seeing himself left out, feels sympathy for the former Real Madrid striker.

Most players do not have a very successful second spell with the club after almost reaching the twilight of their respective careers. Examples include Ronaldo, Fowler and even maybe Thierry Henry.

However, having said that, Fowler had a fantastic career at Liverpool and will forever be a legend at the club. The centre-forward is currently one of the ambassadors at the club and remains vocal when it comes to matters about Liverpool.

The Toxteth Terror would have liked to extend his initial spell with the club, but nevertheless, during his time, he was one of the best strikers in the league. Few who saw Fowler in their prime went away unconvinced that they were witnessing a great at work.
