Liverpool linked with 22-year-old Dutch defensive star impressing in the Serie A

Transfer News: Liverpool linked with Torino defender Perr Schuurs

According to Italian news outlet Tuttomercato Web (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are showing interest in Torino FC’s 22-year-old centre-back Perr Schuurs. The Dutch international has previously played for Eredivisie giants Ajax Amsterdam.

The Reds were linked with a move for Schuurs sometime in December 2020 as well. Back then, the player acknowledged the rumours and said that he was committed to Ajax. A €9m deal earlier this summer saw him move from the Netherlands to Italy.

Schuurs has faced the Reds twice in his career, both in the UEFA Champions League with Ajax back in 2020. His team lost both games but he caught the eye of Liverpool’s recruitment team.

For a 21-year-old, he has a lot of experience in the top tier and has played 81 games across the two leagues he has featured in alongside his UCL appearances. In case he makes the move to Liverpool, he could come under the wing of his compatriot Virgil van Dijk.

Frequent injuries to the backline mean that securing the position is of utmost importance for Jurgen Klopp. Currently, Joel Matip is out with an injury situation and Ibrahima Konate only recently made the return to the first team.

Depth in the Central defensive positions

Matip and Van Dijk, are both over 30 and the Reds could do with long-term security in the position. Younger options in Joe Gomez, Nathaniel Phillips and obviously Ibou are available, but adding depth can never be bad, and that too for an injury-prone team like ours.

Rhys Williams and Sepp van Den Berg are also options Klopp could use, but they are not the finished products yet. The pair could do with a loan move or two in the short run, assuming they even make the cut to thrive at Anfield.

Known for his physicality and aggressive approach since his early Ajax days, Schuur could turn out to be a positive story for the Reds. However, he is still raw around the edges and has much to learn before staking a claim in the Reds’ first team.
