Mirror claimed a few weeks ago, that Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani is in the race to buy Liverpool FC from FSG, who made it public weeks ago their intentions to put the Merseyside outfit for sale.
Ambani, with a net worth of over £90billion, is the world’s eighth-richest man and saw himself linked multiple times in the past as well with the ownership of Liverpool, especially after the Hicks and Gillet era.
However, ABP News via Liverpool Echo report that Ambani is not in the race for the ownership of Liverpool, and also branded these reports as outright ‘fake’. The businessman also owns the Indian Premier League team Mumbai Indians, and through his company, has founded the country’s football league, Indian Super League.
FSG have sought the help of Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs to oversee the financials of the deal. Liverpool FC stands valued at around £4b and with one of the media front-runners in Ambani no longer in the race, it is to be seen who shall step forward and take over the club.
There has been some interest from the Middle East as well and a few other American sports team owners but nothing concrete as of now. Speaking of the present owners, FSG- the club has stabilised under their guidance.
Under FSG, the club re-grew into the European superpower they were and also won their 19th league title along with other domestic, continental and world-level accolades. Infrastructure developments, new training facilities, and a revamp of Anfield have been possible with FSG at the helm.
They were obviously not the biggest spenders in the transfer market. But their leadership helped the Reds overcome a rocky period in the early 2010s and formed the foundation on which our success under Jurgen Klopp was built on.
Perhaps this is as far as they could have taken us and we need someone else to make us competitive in the transfer market. As for Mukesh Ambani, it could have been a great opportunity for the Reds to grow further in an area where the Reds are widely loved.
Moreover, his running of Mumbai Indians and his role in the ISL show his inclination towards sports. It could have been an exciting union but as of now, it doesn’t seem likely.
An honest Liverpool fan would hope that the new owners are understanding of the club’s history, and culture so that they are not against the culture of the club in the way they function and run the team.
Speaking of on-the-field matters, the Reds are currently on a four-match winning streak across all competitions and headed into the International break with some form on their side. Hopefully, the same continues post the World Cup as well.
