Glen Johnson says people judged Liverpool star Darwin Nunez too quickly
Speaking in an interview with OLBG as quoted by Liverpool Echo, former Liverpool star Glen Johnson says people judged Darwin Nunez way too quickly and jumped the gun in judging the Uruguayan.
Nunez has slowly yet surely has settled into life at Anfield after a rough start and is looking like the player Liverpool paid all the money for with every passing day. The former Benfica man drew a lot of criticism for his performances initially.
The Uruguayan scored a couple of goals in Liverpool’s last outing just before the World Cup break as Southampton lost 1-3 to Jurgen Klopp’s men. It was an impressive showing from the talented striker.
What impressed about Nunez that day was not just the goals but his runs and link-up play with the rest of the team. He looked like he belonged here and that augurs well for the club in the long run.
The 23-year-old has played 18 times for the Reds across all competitions this season scoring nine goals and providing two assists. These numbers will only keep improving as time goes and that will delight Klopp.
Speaking in an interview, Johnson said that people rushed with their judgement about the striker.
“Everyone jumped the gun too early to say he was a disappointment. He’s not been there long. It’s not easy to go to a big club and hit the ground running”
Nunez is now out on international duty with Uruguay where he will be competing with Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani for the striker role. He will be key to the South American club’s chances in the World Cup.
A huge season awaits Nunez. A good performance in the World Cup will give him the confidence to really succeed at Liverpool and he can be one of Klopp’s most important players for the second half of the season.
