Liverpool ready to spend £20 million on French forward Marcus Thuram
Spanish outlet Nacional (h/t Liverpool Echo) claim that Liverpool are ‘ready’ to spend £20 million on Borussia Monchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram. The Frenchman has been on top form this season and is the Bundesliga’s second-highest goal-scorer after Christopher Nkunku.
The son of former French striker Lilian Thuram, Marcus has been among the best strikers in the German top tier for a while now. In 17 appearances this season, he has 13 goals and four assists across all competitions. He is a part of Didier Deschamps’s France squad for the World Cup later this month.
Thuram is a highly versatile player who can play on either wing and obviously down the centre as well. The right-footer also has the most shots on goal in the Bundesliga this season by a sizable margin, which speaks of his ability to get in the right position at the right times.
With Roberto Firmino’s contract ending next summer (Transfermarkt), Thuram might be a long-term replacement for the Brazilian. The attack seems to be the most sorted of all departments at Liverpool presently.
Alongside Mohamed Salah and Bobby, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez provide the Reds with enough firepower in terms of offence. Another attacker may not be the most required for additions, but having depth can never hurt any team, and certainly not Liverpool.
However, the funds available for a transfer, in the most ideal of situations, should be channelled towards signing a midfielder. Almost in a make-or-break situation, the midfielders at Liverpool are either not up to standard or are ageing.
Thuram or a midfielder?
Hence, in order to secure the long-term future of the club, the signing of a central midfielder should be the top priority for the club. However, a quality player like Thuram doesn’t come easily and the Reds would not want to miss out on that aspect as well.

Thuram runs out of contract next summer at the Bundesliga club, and Monchengladbach could do with selling him in the January transfer window as it is their last opportunity to cash in on the player. Instead, he could leave for free come June 2023 (Transfermarkt).
