According to Liverpool Echo, it is tough to see Liverpool shelling out £32million to sign Brazilian midfielder Arthur Melo on a permanent deal from Juventus.
Arthur was signed on a loan deal with an option to buy by Liverpool towards the latter stages of the transfer window in response to midfield injury issues at the beginning of the season.
Things exactly did not turn out as per the plan as Arthur has only managed to play 19 minutes for Liverpool till now with the sole appearance coming off the bench in the 4-1 embarrassing loss to Napoli in the UEFA Champions League opening game.
Thereafter, the player sustained a thigh injury which was termed as a serious one after a string of tests, ruling the player out until 2023. Thus, it makes sense for Liverpool to not continue further with the deal as the sole initial purpose of the move could not be achieved.
With Liverpool speculated to go big on a world-class midfielder, the money saved from not permanently signing Arthur could help us a lot in attaining the primary targets. Jude Bellingham is tipped to be part of a bidding war come next summer with Liverpool also deemed as one of the seriously interested parties.
Noise for Declan Rice and Konrad Laimer is also taking the rounds but as of now, with the FIFA World Cup, no clarity could be provided on the direction the club will choose to take.
There are not many in our current midfield that can operate with a high work rate to allow our fullbacks to attack, which is our main source of the attack and a distorted midfield is a big reason for our disappointing first half of the season.
Hence, it’s crucial that our priority in the upcoming transfer windows should be to strengthen our midfield and a player in the mould of Georginio Wijnaldum capable of playing as a proper box-to-box midfielder would be highly welcomed.
Arthur arguably serves as an example of the club’s poor planning in the transfer market. We cannot be lazy and late with our dealings again – especially for a position that is crying out for improvement.
