Chief Liverpool Echo journalist Ian Doyle in a Q&A session was asked about whether Manchester United being put for sale would have any adverse effect on Liverpool’s goal of attaining new ownership.
Doyle replied that although it does provide added competition for Liverpool now, as many earlier interested parties could turn their attention but believes it would not have any major adverse effect on Liverpool’s plans.
” We don’t know of any concrete offers at the moment. However, United being up for sale won’t change the value of Liverpool. It will though, make it a bit more difficult to actually find a buyer as there are now two rather large sporting institutions on the market.”
It was pretty surprising when Liverpool owners, the FSG Group, decided to look for additional investment with a view to changing ownership at a later stage.
The decision was viewed as a positive one with regard to the profound investments being made by the owners of our rivals and many were fearful that it would eventually create a distance between Liverpool and other top clubs in the league due to their financial spending.
Now, a few days ago our rivals Manchester United also officially announced strategic plans to bring more investment into the club by way of sale or co-operated ownership, depending on the best deal at hand.
Hence, suddenly many investors which showed concrete interest in acquiring stakes in Liverpool could turn their attention to United, as in all honesty, it is a much more enticing business to acquire in terms of the club’s commercial value.
It is rather tough to believe and unprecedented that two of England’s most prestigious institutions are aiming for a change of ownership at the same time.
It would be a crucial year for us to have an idea of the direction in which the club is headed but one thing is for sure as seen with the example of Manchester United, we cannot afford to slow down as our rivals are doing everything possible to maintain a stronghold over their dominance.
