Liverpool have shown a lot of interest in Ajax’s attacking midfielder Mohammed Kudus. The 22-year-old playmaker’s talent has been on show this World Cup, with him scoring two goals in two appearances for Ghana at the time of publication.
The Reds’ gaffer would have had a close look at the player when Liverpool played Ajax in two of their group-stage games earlier this season in the UEFA Champions League. Kudus was in fine form heading into the World Cup as well, scoring 10 goals and securing two assists in 21 appearances this season.
However, with his antics for Ghana on the biggest stage in world football, a move to a big club might not be a far stretch. With him having a lot of interest
from Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle and Everton as well, the Reds will need to move quickly in their attempt to get the player at Anfield. His team-mate at Ghana, Inaki Williams told Radio Marca (h/t Liverpool Echo) that Kudus is one of the most talented players in the national team, and he could soon be headed towards a European giant.
“My teammates at Athletic Bilbao often ask me who impresses me in the national team. I always mention his name. Ajax is becoming too small (for him). Hopefully, he will soon make the step up to a big club.”
The player plays an advanced role in midfield which could possibly reduce the workload on defensive midfielder Fabinho. Moreover, he can also play the role of a 9 and can fit into providing depth in the right wing as well.
However, from a practical perspective, a central midfielder would suit the Reds. In a sense, Kudus’ primary position would not necessarily fit into Liverpool’s most usual formation of a 4-3-3 with a defensive midfielder. Although having said, it is important to note that we have played in different formations this season, including a 4-4-2 diamond.
But with that said, Ajax and Liverpool share a wonderful bit of transfer business, with Luis Suarez and Ryan Babel a few of the latest players to have played for both clubs. Kudus joining the Reds could also mean that the manager could mould him to fit into the Reds’ squad. Jurgen Klopp is famous for bringing the best out of his players by tweaking their natural positions.
Kudos to Kudus for playing exceedingly well at the World Cup. Hopefully, he joins the Reds post the event in Qatar because this could be the next step in his career that propels him to stardom.
His versatility means he will get playing time, be it in midfield, the number 10 role, or down either wing. It just remains to be seen if the owners will be open to sanctioning such a deal.
