Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson thinks that SL Benfica’s 21-year-old midfielder Enzo Fernandez could fulfil his potential and beyond in case he makes the move to Liverpool. The player is among the plenty of midfielders who see themselves linked with a move to Anfield.
The player recently hit the headlines after his strike against Mexico in the World Cup a few weeks ago. Fernandez has a long-term contract until 2027 at his club, and moreover, his contract also has a release clause of €120m.
Enzo’s first half of the season was great, scoring three goals and assisting five in 24 appearances in all competitions. His balanced style of play in the middle of the pitch could be something the Reds could work their game around in the future, and even former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson believes the same.
Speaking to Football Betting (h/t Liverpool Echo), Eriksson, who has also managed Benfica, said this about Enzo potentially joining Liverpool which could shape his career for his good:
“Before the tournament I didn’t know a huge amount about Fernandez, but from what I’ve seen he looks like a talented boy.”
“I think he looks like a player who would do well in the Premier League but he’d need some fine tuning. Jurgen Klopp is the type of manager to turn him into a superstar, so if Liverpool want him that’s a good sign.”
From what one can tell by looking at his play, Fernandez has an engine on him and is really good in transition play as well. At a time when the ageing legs of Liverpool cannot continue in the long term, the prospect of Fernandez on the Reds’ ranks is enticing.
However, his huge price tag is something Liverpool could have a tough time coming up with given their interest in Jude Bellingham, who may not be available for anything cheaper than what Benfica want for Enzo.
It is extremely essential for the Reds to lay out their priorities straight, and stick to something without changing their decision based on a few games in the World Cup. The recruitment team would have done their job, and it is about time we get on some big names at the club.
There is no doubt about Fernandez’s skill level but given the owners’ reluctance to spend money, it is hard to see the player at Anfield, in case the Reds sign Jude as FSG is famous for not pumping enough money for transfers into the club.
In any case, signing a midfielder should be one of Liverpool’s top priorities in the coming transfer windows. Whether it is Fernandez or Jude, or possibly both if the angels bless us with a billion pounds overnight, only time will tell.
