The Mirror reports a shock summer move for Liverpool’s #9 Roberto Firmino to Saudi Arabia Al-Nassr. The signing of Diogo Jota back in 2020 pushed Bobby a bit in the pecking order, and Darwin Nunez’s arrival over the summer made the case worse for the Brazilian.
But the former TSG Hoffenheim striker took it on his own and proved a point to everyone watching, and has been one of the best Liverpool players this season. In 21 appearances across all competitions this season, he has nine goals and four assists including a hat-trick against Bournemouth.
The Middle East offers a fat cheque for any European player coming their way. Bobby, at 31, in case he signs a contract extension, could probably be the last major deal he signs given how most footballers start to drop off in their mid-to-late thirties.
One could not imagine a player like Bobby leaving the club in that fashion. He has shown this year that he still has a lot left in his tank, and he is extremely capable of those big performances on the biggest of stages.
Moreover, it is extremely tough to replace a player like him who is extremely selfless in the way he plays and the general notion of a False 9 in European football seems to diminish with more teams opting for an out-and-out striker. Examples include Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and even Nunez at Liverpool for that matter.
Firmino would have been extremely disappointed to miss out on World Cup action for Brazil. But nevertheless, it is crucial for him to keep his head up high and deliver on the club level and put out a statement that the Brazil gaffer erred in leaving Bobby out of the squad.
Bobby is part of the mid-season training camp in Dubai where the Reds will play AC Milan and Lyon in friendlies, and also, in the absence of Darwin and Jota, Firmino could lead the lines for Liverpool.
All in all, we can only hope for Bobby to ‘sign the ting’ as soon as possible to secure his future with the club, as he is a very integral part of Jurgen Klopp’s side.
In fact, Firmino is Klopp’s most used player at the club and he has a lot more to offer than just goals and assists in terms of his hold-up play in the final third of the pitch to release the wingers.
