According to The Independent, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp does not appear to be concerned about Darwin Nunez and his lack of clinical showing in front of the goal.
The Uruguayan striker continues to be a menace to opposing defences and proved to be a handful for the Aston Villa rearguard to handle. He did not, however, aid his case by missing several goalscoring opportunities.
Despite not getting on the scoresheet himself on the night, Nunez did enough to help Liverpool to a 3-1 win, earning himself an assist for Stefan Bajcetic’s first-ever senior goal. The strike ensured the Reds came away with a critical three points that the performance deserved.
It is the nature of the modern sport that fans and detractors alike choose to focus on a player’s shortcomings rather than what is brought to the table. Nunez has been privy to such criticism since moving to Merseyside and was subjected to the same on Boxing Day.
Klopp has refused to bite the bullet and has backed his 23-year-old striker to come good. The Uruguayan’s reading of the game coupled with his pace makes him a difficult player to go up against.
“He’s unstoppable in the moment when we keep the ball and pass it in the right moment, there’s no defender who can really catch up speed-wise.”
As the manager, Klopp has a better understanding
of just what Nunez brings to the table and is standing firm behind his striker. While Nunez could do with some polish, he infuses chaos in the opposition rearguard, making life easier for his teammates. At the end of the day, the 23-year-old is doing all he can to help his team.“Everything will be fine. He played an exceptional game and we won 3-1 and that’s all that counts.”
Liverpool face Leicester City on Friday night and the Reds will hope that Nunez will continue his fine vein of form. There is no better way to silence your detractors than to succeed.
Nunez has vast potential that is not yet being tapped into. Despite the criticism he receives, the 23-year-old has nine goals and four assists in 20 games
across all competitions for the Reds. If these are his numbers when he is in poor form, we are in for a ride once he clicks into gear.Jurgen Klopp insists his spat with Liverpool star Mohamed Salah is a thing of the…
