Liverpool in advanced talks to sign Argentine sensation Enzo Fernandez
According to reports from Portuguese outlet O Jogo (h/t The Metro), Premier League giants Liverpool are in advanced talks to sign Argentina’s World Cup-winning midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
The 21-year-old moved to SL Benfica last summer and has since seen his reputation soar to the skies. A solid showing in Argentina’s World Cup triumph has only hastened his rise to stardom and saw him crowned the tournament’s best young player.
A defensive midfielder who can fulfil an all-action role in the middle of the park, Fernandez’s physicality coupled with his ability on the ball is the best of brawn and finesse. He would make a solid addition to a Reds’ side that is seeking to revamp its midfield.
Liverpool have been linked with Fernandez for a while but concrete steps appear to have been taken in recent days to get a deal over the line. There appears to be progress in negotiations and it remains to be seen if an agreement can be found.
Liverpool continue to keep in touch with Fernandez’s entourage and only time will tell if the persistence will bear fruit. The Reds often get the work done behind the scenes and laying the groundwork to land the 21-year-old would be something out of their transfer handbook.
Our fans would know that by now. Fernandez would, on paper, be another player for the future alongside Harvey Elliott, Fabio Carvalho, and Curtis Jones. But the maturity he has shown for Benfica and Argentina indicate that he is ahead of his years and could be an immediate starter for us – if he does come here.
Landing the 21-year-old will not be easy with Manchester United also in the race. The Red Devils are still smarting over losing out to Liverpool in the race to land Cody Gakpo. Falling short against the Reds in the pursuit of Enzo would be a second hammering blow.
The Reds’ midfield needs a major revamp that cannot be fixed by bringing in just one player. However landing Enzo would certainly be a solid way of kickstarting that restructure.

Fernandez has a mammoth £106m release clause in his contract. Meeting it will make him Liverpool’s most expensive transfer so far. As long as it will not interfere in our pursuit of Jude Bellingham, there are few other players that Jurgen Klopp and co should go all in for.
