No Liverpool player scored on the day, but the Reds walk back victorious in a 2-1 victory against Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City.
If it was not for some fortune on our side, Liverpool would have found it tough to get a win out of this game. Christmas gifts arrived late for the Reds, with Santa Claus wearing a Leicester City kit. Wout Faes un/fortunately scored two own goals on the night handing Liverpool the win on a platter in what was the Reds’ last game of 2022.
The first one looked like a genuine mistake wherein the ball went in off his shinpads, but the second own goal, Darwin Nunez’s shot on goal hit the post and it almost seemed like Faes stood there to ensure that the ball went beyond Danny Ward.
The scoreline stood the same even during half-time and former Liverpool left-back Jose Enrique was too excited to see the Reds winning in a game they should have not been, in all fairness. Here is Enrique’s tweet during the halfway stage of the game rightly criticising Liverpool FC’s performance.
Faes was unlucky, of course, but perhaps a defender with more experience could have prevented the two goals. Nevertheless, we forced those two goals in a way – firstly from a cross from Trent, and second, from a Nunez shot.
Speaking of the game, Jordan Henderson’s performance gave the fans a good reminder of why the Reds see themselves linked to Jude Bellingham. He was miles off it today, and even Andy Robertson was not at his best.
Following the birth of his child, Fabinho’s day off meant that the Reds had to play without a defensive midfielder, and it showed its effects with the Reds conceding a goal within 10 minutes of kickoff.
Apart from a solid defensive game from Trent Alexander-Arnold and creative output from Thiago Alcantara in the middle of the pitch, the rest of the team was virtually not even playing the game. Certainly not the performance with which the Reds would have wanted their year to end, but hey, a win is a win and who are we to complain?
Next up, Brentford (A). Hopefully, that game sees the Reds change their approach to the game apart from their calendars. God willing, the change in the last digit of the year brings about a change to Liverpool’s tough times on the pitch as well, making sure the Reds get emphatic wins rather than gifts like this one.
