Liverpool could buy back Melwood for the Women’s Team

In what could be a major decision, Liverpool could buy back their old training ground in Melwood to house the training facilities for the women’s team. The ladies recently made the return to the top flight after two seasons in the second division.

The men’s first-team training facility moved out of Melwood in November 2020 to the £50m AXA training ground in Kirkby and have been training there since. The organization which took over the Reds’ old training ground teamed up with Liverpool icons Robbie Fowler and Jamie Carragher to retain Melwood for community work.

The Women’s Team currently train at Tranmere’s Solar Campus in Wallasey, Wirral. Even though the team could stand accommodated at Kirkby, the manager wanted to house the entire women’s setup instead of just the first team. Recently, Jamie Carragher put out a Tweet on the Reds’ interest to buy Melwood back.

Looking at it from a sentimental point of view, Melwood obviously has a lot of importance in Liverpool’s history anyways. The Reds trained there over five decades starting in 1950 and now hopefully, the women’s team can continue to do so as well.

Over the years, Melwood has certainly seen some of the greatest players in Liverpool’s history come through its doors, including the likes of Steven Gerrard, Robbie Fowler, and Kenny Dalglish.

Also, having a dedicated training facility for the ladies instead of depending on the Solar Campus is a step in the right direction as that shows the club’s intention to grow the sport for women as well.

However, the ECHO writes that the talks for a buy-back are still in the developing stages and not yet close to a conclusion. Hopefully, the Reds can get this through as Melwood is a very important piece of Liverpool’s history.
