Liverpool superstar outlines major deficit in Reds’ squad that led to Real Madrid loss

Alisson Becker blames “lack of attitude” for Liverpool defeat vs Real Madrid

Liverpool shot-stopper Alisson Becker has blamed a “lack of attitude” for the Merseyside outfit’s defeat at the hands of Real Madrid in the Champions League.

In the first-leg, the Reds got off to a flying start, taking a two-goal lead. However, we subsequently crumbled and Los Blancos scored five goals past our 30-year-old Brazilian goalkeeper in front of the Kop.

On Wednesday (15 March), Jurgen Klopp’s team visited Santiago Bernabeu, looking for an emphatic comeback. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be as Karim Benzema found the back of the net in the 78th minute to hand Carlo Ancelotti’s team a 1-0 victory.

Speaking to TNT Sports via 90min (h/t Liverpool Echo), Alisson believes Liverpool lacked the cutting edge and did not have enough to peg Madrid back. He feels the Reds were missing a lot of things during the game.

“We had a fantastic, incredible game against United. Soon after, an inexplicable game against Bournemouth. And against Real Madrid, it’s not that we played badly, but we didn’t play enough to tie the game. There was a lack of attitude, a lot was lacking on our part.”

In the first half at Santiago Bernabeu, both teams created a number of opportunities. For Liverpool, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo had chances to give the Reds the breakthrough.

The opening 45 minutes were exciting and provided end-to-end action. Unfortunately, we were unable to beat Thibaut Courtois and went into the break level with the Spanish giants.

After half-time, the Merseyside outfit did not show up. It was the La Liga outfit who looked threatening for the majority of the time after the break. Then, Benzema was on hand to ensure victory for Anelotti’s team.

Having been eliminated from the FA Cup and with Liverpool struggling in the Premier League, the UCL was our only realistic shot at silverware this season. After the historic 7-0 win over Manchester United, Klopp’s team had instilled some hope in the fanbase.

But Madrid proved to be too big an obstacle for us to go past. The only thing that remains now is a spot in the top four. Hopefully, we will be able to pip the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United in the league table.
