According to Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool midfield target Adrien Rabiot could sign a new contract and continue his stay with Juventus beyond the coming summer.
Rabiot, whose contract with the Old Lady is due to expire at the end of this season, was a subject of interest for a free transfer from Liverpool and other top European clubs.
But, recent reports suggest that the Frenchman could sign a new deal with the Italian giants. They are willing to offer a contract worth €10m
a year with bonuses. If Liverpool really wanted to sign Rabiot, could they have not offered a pre-contract agreement for the player to sign in January? With his current deal expiring in the summer, that move was on for any foreign club.
What this possibly shows is that the 27-year-old may not be on the top-tier list of midfielders the club is looking to sign in the summer.
Although the 2022 World Cup finalist is a fine player, his style of play would not have suited Jurgen Klopp’s system.
Rabiot is a forward-thinking midfielder who likes to contribute with goals and assists. He is a decent player off the ball but does not represent the intensity required to fare well in a Klopp team.
Recent updates on Jude Bellingham’s likelihood to arrive at Anfield slightly diminishing would raise concerns regarding Liverpool’s plan for the summer.
With Rabiot potentially staying on at Juventus, the Reds have to continue to be creative in the transfer market.
Mason Mount remains the likelier signing among all the targets at the moment, while we are yet to get any update on the probability of Matheus Nunes coming in the summer.
A lot can still happen from now till the window starts. So, let’s not count any chickens and hope that the club has the solutions for the issues in the squad.
