Liverpool left-back and Scotland captain Andy Robertson has hit back at Spain’s Rodri over his comments regarding Scotland’s playing style in their recent Euro 2024 qualifier match. Robertson said that Scotland’s physical approach was justified and that they did not cross any lines during the game. (h/t ECHO)
“They were going down a little bit easily. We were always going to be physical, we wanted to win our challenges – we did that, and I don’t think we crossed a line. We got under their skin a bit. It was an all-round top performance.”
Spain’s Rodri had suggested that Scotland were wasting too much time during the game and that their physicality was not in line with fair play. However, Robertson argued that Scotland had played within the rules of the game and that their approach had helped them to secure a 2-0 victory.
Robbo, who assisted one of two Scott McTominay goals has had a great international break and would hope to carry this momentum back to Merseyside from where the Reds will travel to Manchester to face Pep Guardiola’s City.
Scotland’s victory over Spain was a significant result for the team, and it is clear that Robertson remains to ensure that the team’s achievements don’t stand undermined by criticism from opposing players.
Liverpool fans will no doubt be pleased to see Robertson’s fighting spirit on display for his national team. It is clear that his leadership qualities obviously always remain highly valued by his teammates. Robertson’s performances for Liverpool have also been consistently impressive, as the 29-year-old has 9 assists this season from 32
appearances across all competitions.Robertson’s comments certainly reflect a desire to defend his team’s playing style and to stand up for his teammates in the face of criticism. Scotland’s victory over Spain was obviously a hard-fought and well-deserved result.
Robertson’s strong defence of Scotland’s playing style and leadership qualities are indicative of the determination and drive he brings to both his national team and Liverpool.
With Liverpool obviously facing an uphill battle to secure a top-four finish after a difficult start to the season, Robertson’s momentum and fighting spirit will be crucial in the final phase of the league stage. Liverpool fans will hope that Robertson can bring his winning mentality and intensity back to Anfield and help the team finish the season strongly in a UCL spot.
