LFC Transfer News: Liverpool aim to sign Caoimhin Kelleher replacement this summer

Liverpool will apparently look to sign a new goalkeeper in the summer transfer window, with Caoimhin Kelleher linked with an exit from the club.

This is according to the Daily Mail (h/t the Express), who state that the Reds will enter the market for a new shot-stopper if the 10-cap Republic of Ireland international leaves. It would make sense if Kelleher does seek a move away from Anfield.

The 24-year-old is entering the prime years of his career and he can’t afford to be benched regularly if he wants to unfurl his full potential. Alisson Becker is one of the very best goalkeepers in the world.

There will hardly be any meaningful chances for him here as long as the Brazil international keeps up his good work. Despite our poor season, Alisson has been one of our top players.

What next for Kelleher?

There shouldn’t be a shortage of suitors for Kelleher if he is on the market. The former Ringmahon stopper has shown time and again that he is a very able deputy for Alisson whenever the latter is unavailable.

He has made just three senior appearances for us this term and none of them have come in the Premier League or the UEFA Champions League. Liverpool will be wise to sign a goalie if he does leave.

Adrian San Miguel can’t be trusted as he is at the dusk of his playing days and as the past has shown, is error-prone. Alisson, meanwhile, is 30.

While goalkeepers have longer shelf lives, we will be smart if any new goalkeeper who comes in is good enough for the first team but is young enough to wait for his chances and be ready for first-team action when Alisson’s race is run at Anfield.
