In a surprisingly negative turn of events, the Guardian has reported that Liverpool have pulled out of the race to sign Jude Bellingham because they think he is too expensive.
The report reveals that the Reds think signing the sought-after England international would take a lot out of their transfer budget in the coming summer window.
The club are looking for a planned squad overhaul in the summer under Jurgen Klopp. The German has made it clear to the owners that they need to act swiftly in the market this time to avoid transfer targets moving elsewhere.
Borussia Dortmund would demand somewhere around £135m if they are to let go of their prized asset. Liverpool think the price, the add-ons and other fees would be a lot to pay.
The report also unveiled a list of alternative midfield targets the club has in mind. Mason Mount of Chelsea, Moises Caicedo of Brighton and Hove Albion, Matheus Nunes of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ryan Gravenberch are on that list.
It is baffling to read this report as a Liverpool fan. We basically ditched this season by not spending much last summer because the money had to be saved to buy Bellingham this year.
After all that, the exact reason for pulling out of this race is the ‘cost’, as if they did not know the 19-year-old’s stock has been on the rise in the last 12 months.
If we end up signing alternatives, this is another kick in the teeth for this club. After being shrewd operators in the market between 2017 and 2020, they have become a bunch of delusional beings. Or maybe they are too arrogant.
The squad overhaul had to be based around the signing of Bellingham. After a season we have had, signing only top players would make a difference going forward. We are already one step behind and the summer is still a couple of months away. A dark time to come for this club. Enjoy the demise!
