Jamie Carragher does not think Liverpool have a chance to finish in the top four
Jamie Carragher has cooled down the chances of Liverpool finishing in the top four despite a massive 6-1 win over Leeds United on Monday night.
The Reds claimed only their fourth away win in the league this season. They have struggled on the road consistently, even losing against teams in the relegation battle. Keeping that in mind, this big win over Leeds came out of nowhere.
But, if we look back at this campaign, Jurgen Klopp’s men have had some marquee results – be it the 7-0 thrashing of Manchester United, the 9-0 humbling of Bournemouth and more. But, they have laboured for consistency.
Carragher doesn’t trust them to put together a run of wins, hence very little chance to finish in the top four. Here’s what he said (h/t Sky Sports, via Chronicle Live):
“If Liverpool play like that and have a consistent run of performances and get anywhere close to that tonight – the fixtures are – most of the games, they should win. As we’ve seen from the graphic tonight, that’s the first time they’ve beaten someone below them, away from home in the league this season.
“The problem is, you can’t trust Liverpool. You’ve never been able to trust them since the first game of the season at Fulham and that’s not changed.”
Carragher is right here. We have witnessed plenty of false dawns in the last seven months. So, getting carried away after beating a hapless Leeds would be naivety.
Currently, Liverpool are six points behind fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur and nine behind fourth-placed Newcastle United. While fourth looks a bit too far with only eight games remaining, fifth is in sight because the Reds welcome Spurs at Anfield in a few weeks’ time.
Klopp must be looking and hoping to put a run of wins together without thinking about what it does to the league table. At the moment, his team have not earnt the right to play games with table position on their minds.

Nottingham Forest come to Anfield for a Saturday afternoon kick-off. They beat us in the reverse fixture before the World Cup. It is time for some revenge and hopefully making it two wins in two.
