Liverpool hold talks with Tim Steidten for the vacant sporting director role
According to Football Insider (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have held talks with former Bayer Leverkusen director Tim Steidten for the vacant sporting director role at the club.
The current director Julian Ward has already submitted his wish to leave his role at the end of this season. He did that in November, a decision that shocked the club and surprised Jurgen Klopp. He won’t be taking the Ajax job as well and take a break from the game.
The search for a new director continues with plenty of names in the hat. The final decision is yet to be made. They must hurry up the process because we are not far away from the summer transfer window where sporting directors play key roles in negotiating player deals.
Looking at the job in hand with regard to the squad overhaul, having an experienced sporting director would help the cause in the shrewd running of the club behind the scenes.
Steidten, who left his role at Leverkusen in March, was linked with Chelsea last year when they were searching for a director.
The 43-year-old was a head of scouting with the German club for three years before taking over the sporting director role last summer. He is a former employee of Werder Bremen at various levels in multiple roles between 2008 and 2019.
It would be interesting to see how this search culminates for Liverpool. If they get it right here, the ability to sign players and run the footballing operations will become smooth, which would only aid Klopp in focusing on preparing his team to win games.
