According to Pete O’Rourke on Football Insider, Liverpool will be expected to have a busy summer transfer window with as many as five players being brought in. He wrote in his exclusive column:
“Jurgen Klopp’s side are planning a huge overhaul of their squad this summer with up to five additions expected. I’m told Liverpool could move for as many as three central midfielders as they brace for high-profile exits – which include the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner.
Centre-back has also been highlighted as an area needing improvement, with Klopp green-lighting a deal for a new defender in the off-season.”
The Reds have now won three straight Premier League games on the spin, giving them an outside chance of breaking into the top four. Regardless of whether that happens or not, John Henry will need to get his chequebook out in the summer.
Jurgen Klopp is now set to embark on his rebuild and standards will be high given what he has achieved with the team in the past. Liverpool need more than a couple of players to rekindle the flame and it would appear Anfield is preparing for just that.
The focus appears to be on strengthening the midfield and the backline. As things stand, the Reds will not bring in an attacker despite Roberto Firmino’s imminent departure.
Unsurprisingly the club has been backed to sign three central midfielders, an area that has often been neglected in recent times. With Klopp switching tactics, it is clear that an infusion of energy in central midfield could elevate the side’s output.
The defence has also been far from stellar and this is prompting Klopp to make additions. The German has approved the signing of a new centre-back and given our form this season, it makes sense.
Virgil van Dijk has lost his aura while Joe Gomez is very inconsistent. Joel Matip is not getting any younger and could leave in the summer. Bringing in a long-term partner for Ibrahima Konate would be a shrewd piece of business.
A right-back is also on the agenda given Trent Alexander-Arnold could be shifted into midfield. The Englishman has thrived in the role of an inverted fullback and it will be something the Reds can polish. Bringing in a reliable right-back will free up Trent for just that role.
John Henry was at the game against West Ham prompting speculation about his visit to London. Hopefully, it is to hand Klopp the goods needed to bring in his preferred targets.
