“Quite far ahead”- Liverpool star not confident of top-four chances despite Fulham win

Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson admits top four is far ahead after the Fulham win

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has admitted that the Reds do not have much of a chance to be in the top four despite beating Fulham and making it five Premier League wins in a row.

The Reds won this game 1-0 thanks to a faultless penalty from Mohamed Salah. Darwin Nunez won the foul with a sharp piece of work to rob Issa Diop of the ball before getting clipped by the Frenchman.

It was a scrappy encounter with both teams having half-chances throughout, but neither of them were clinical in front of the goal. Although not pretty to the eye, three points are what matters right now.

Here’s Henderson talking about the importance of winning five games in a row and admitting defeat in the top four race (h/t BBC):

“It’s always difficult to win games in the Premier League. Five on the spin is very good. We’ve shown more consistency. We need to continue that until the end of the season and carry it on into next season too. A clean sheet is something we’ve been looking for.

“I doubt it [applying pressure for a top four push]. I think if you look at who is ahead of us, they are very good and quite far ahead.

It is a sensible take from the Reds skipper who knows the team has left it a bit late to start this winning run. But, as they say, better late than never.

If they win the last four games and still do not qualify for the Champions League, Jurgen Klopp might use this run as the momentum-creator when the players return for the pre-season in July.

Ending a season with consecutive wins, irrespective of what the ending position is on the table, is always a welcome thing because the confidence gained can help in starting the next season on the right foot.

Playing in the UEFA Europa League may help Klopp in shaping the squad in a way that the key players get rested for the Thursday night games to focus solely on the league. Will that help the team in getting back to challenging Manchester City for the title? We never know.
